US Market Momentum Weekly · 23 October 2026

2026-10-23

US market breadth improved this week, though the recovery still leaves most stocks below their key trend lines. The share of stocks above the 50-day reading rose to 39.39%, a gain of 10.64 percentage points, while the 150-day and 200-day readings edged up to 44.46% and 46.28%, respectively. The combined reading climbed 5.07 points to 43.38%. In plain terms, fewer than half of stocks sit above any of the tracked averages, and only about two in five are above the shorter-term line.

The direction is up, but the move is 1 week old and the band remains Neutral. That pattern usually points to a bounce within a still-unsettled structure rather than a broad-based repair. What stands out is where the improvement is concentrated: the gain at the short end is far larger than the modest moves at the longer horizons, which suggests the shift is being driven by recent price action rather than a change in the longer-term picture.

Against the signal lines, the combined reading sits 9.12 points above its 20-trading-day line but 10.30 points below its 50-trading-day line. Meaning the short-term measure has turned up while the medium-term measure has not been reclaimed. Which suggests the current reading is a partial recovery, not a confirmed broadening.

About this metric

This report measures the share of stocks in the market trading above their 50-day, 150-day and 200-day moving averages. The composite is the arithmetic mean of the three percentages and gauges the breadth of participation. Moving averages use adjusted prices, and stocks without enough history for a given average are excluded from that day. These are our own definitions, provided for research reference.
